Responsible AI is a lifecycle practice
Responsible AI is not a final checklist applied before launch. It begins when an organisation chooses a use case and continues through design, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement. The level of control should reflect the potential impact on people, customers and the organisation.
Map the system and its context
Document the intended purpose, users, affected groups, data sources, model or service providers, integrations and decision points. Identify where outputs may influence consequential decisions. A system used to draft internal notes presents a different risk profile from one used to rank applicants or determine access to services.
Test beyond the happy path
Evaluate representative examples, edge cases, ambiguous requests, inappropriate inputs and failure conditions. Review output quality, consistency, privacy exposure, security and susceptibility to misuse. Define what the system must refuse, when it should ask for clarification and when a human must take over.
Establish meaningful human oversight
Human review should be practical, informed and empowered. Reviewers need context, time, clear escalation routes and authority to override an output. Avoid treating a nominal approval step as meaningful oversight if people cannot realistically challenge the system.
Monitor, respond and improve
Track incidents, complaints, quality changes, drift, usage patterns and the effectiveness of safeguards. Keep an incident response process and communicate material changes to users. Reassess the system when its purpose, data, provider or operating environment changes.
